How to reduce your company’s carbon footprint
Calculating your company’s carbon footprint
Your company’s carbon footprint is calculated by direct and indirect emissions. Now, you might ask, “what is the difference between direct and indirect emissions?”
Well, direct emissions include an individual’s actions that create carbon emissions. So, this can be from fossil fuelled home appliances such as boilers or furnaces to the vehicle that you drive. Whereas, indirect emissions is the carbon dioxide that is released into the atmosphere from organisations. These can include the carbon dioxide that is released from goods being transported to or from you. Or from the carbon emissions produced from purchased electricity/heat for your company’s premise.
The burning of fossil fuels is the main culprit when it comes to human produced carbon dioxide emissions. This is why more and more people and companies are looking towards sourcing their energy sustainably.
Cutting down on your carbon footprint will not only meet customer demands of a more sustainable planet, but will also save you money in the long run! Especially with the ever-rising costs of oil.
To start with…
As a first step, you will need to pinpoint where your primary sources of carbon pollution derive from. You should calculate this including indirect emission sources. Did you know that companies are responsible for over 70% of the world’s GHG emissions as a whole? For example, the completed lease agreements on fossil fuelled vehicles at WestWon Dental will also contribute to this.
So thankfully, businesses pledged to take more responsibility on saving our planet at the COP 26 meeting in November 2021. Read more about the conclusions of the COP26 meeting here.
How can I make a difference as an individual?
There are many ways by which you can contribute to a healthier planet for us all. Although you may see yourself as a needle in a haystack, your change of lifestyle could potentially influence those around you. This could then create a butterfly effect, and gradually humanity can change their lifestyles for the future of our planet.
Here are some small changes that could have a big impact:
- Buy local
- Increase your usage of public transport
- Contribute to the purchase of preloved products
- Recycle- whether that be at home or in the workplace
- Turn down your heating- even if this is just by 1 degree
- Consider vegetarian or vegan options. This can be for only a fraction of the week!
- Install renewable sources of energy
